Today is the feast
of the Most Holy Trinity. It helps us better understand our God so we can love Him
more.
I would like to
start with a question. We attribute many titles to God, namely merciful,
gracious, kind and faithful, because God has been merciful, loving and faithful
to man. So, my question is, who would this God be if God did not create
anything at all? The answer to this, I hope, will help us to know the true God
and answer so many doubts.
There are so many
religions around us that say God is one, Almighty, omnipotent and so on. But Christianity
adds something particular. God is one and three divine persons. That is the mystery
of the Most Holy Trinity, the central mystery of the Christian faith and the Christian
life.
But for many, it
seems an absurd idea. But if we consider my question, “who God would be if
creation had not taken place? Only Christianity can give an appropriate answer
to the question. Because for God to be merciful, generous, and faithful, there
must be at least some element of love in the very existence of God. Many
religions and philosophies say that God loves. And love is one of the things
that God does, but of all the religions and philosophies of the world, only Christianity
says that “God is love”. It is not that he has love or loves, but God Is Love.
So what is love? When it comes to love, there are two things
inherent in it. There is someone who loves, and there is someone who is loved.
So love can only be said when there are at least two persons. That means there
must be at least two people in God if God is to be love in his being. On the
other hand, if he is alone means that he loves himself very much, then it is not
called love but Narcissism. We know that it’s a personality disorder. But a perfect
and communitarian love is the love at least among three people. Then the Triune
God is the fullness of love. Only this God can be loving and perfect even if
there is no creation. Only He can be loving, merciful, and faithful.
On the other hand, if God is one person, then he falls not
only under the personality disorder of Narcissism but also needs creatures to
perfect his love. That God in its being is imperfect. So we can’t call Him God.
But the Triune God does not need creation to love, but He created everything
out of his love to be in His fellowship and fullness of His love. That is why
the creation is a reflection of the Triune God.
When we say that God created the universe from nothing, then
scientifically, we can say that three things came into existence: space, Time
and matter. Interestingly, we can note that many things in the universe are
understood by three facts. Time is understood in three dimensions: future, past
and present. We measure area by its height, width, and depth, and light by its
particle, wave, and beam. Physicists examine matter according to energy,
motion, and phenomena. So, the universe is a reflection of the Triune God. Otherwise,
it could not just be a coincidence.
It does not finish there. Look how God created man. He says:
“let us create man in our image and likeness” (Gen1:26). The first-person
plural is evident. And then God created man, male and female. That is, as a
family, he created them. Why? Because God, in his deepest mystery, is not a
solitude, but a family, since he has in himself fatherhood, sonship and the
essence of the family, which is love. Here, Father, Son and Holy Spirit are not
“gender” terms, but relational terms. The language of the divine family is
theological, not biological.
Now look again at how Jesus, the second person of the Trinity,
chose to be on earth when incarnated. The Holy Family of Nazareth was the image
of the Triune God. If Joseph is the image of the heavenly Father, then Mary is overshadowed
by the Holy Spirit, and Christ is the second person, the Son of the Triune God.
Thus, the Holy Family becomes the perfect image of the Triune God on earth and
stands out as a model for our families.
Finally, if we look at the Church, the great family that
Christ founded, its Father is the Pope, and all of us are his sons. We share spiritual
sonship. What unites us is the Holy Spirit. Similarly, our parishes too. Thus
the Church is the perfect image of the Holy Trinity on earth.
That is all true. Many times people still ask if the Bible
speaks of the Trinity. It is true that the Bible does not speak of it
explicitly but implicitly in many parts, as in today’s Gospel, where Jesus
says: “All that the Father has is mine”. What belongs to the Father? Literally,
all things; all things visible and invisible, all things in Heaven and on
earth. So Jesus claims to be equal to his Father. That is, the Father is God,
the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. Now you might wonder how it is possible
that three people can be one?
Obviously, this is beyond our understanding because our
intellect cannot think of eternity. If God could be grasped by our intellect, that
God would not be God. At the same time, our inability to understand does not
mean that it is impossible for God. Furthermore, in mathematics, the only
subject that deals with infinity, it is stated that the answer is infinity if
infinity is multiplied or added by infinity. So how three can be one is not
even a valid doubt. So, Even if this mystery is incomprehensible, we can
nevertheless confess it by faith.
Even if this mystery is incomprehensible, we can
nevertheless confess it by faith. So, let us pray to the Holy Spirit to lead us
to the truth.
Dear friends, I know that these do not have so much to do
with our daily life, but I said this mainly because we did not come to worship
a mythical God but a true God who knows each of us. So when we know Him better,
we can love Him more. If we love Him more, we can worship Him better and
glorify Him.
Let us also remember that the ultimate end of the whole
divine economy is the entry of God’s creatures into the perfect unity of the Blessed
Trinity. But even now, we are called to be a dwelling for the Most Holy
Trinity: “If a man loves me”, says the Lord, “he will keep my word, and my
Father will love him, and we will come to him, and make our home with him” (Jn 14:23).
It is not that we will enter the Trinitarian life, but He who comes to us. The
Eucharist is the concrete manifestation of the arrival of the Trinity, but to
obtain its effect, one must be well disposed of in love. Who can love God? Who
can love God? The 1st letter of John says that he who loves his
brother whom he has seen can love God whom he has not seen. So the Triune God
reminds us to live in love because God is love. So when we love, we are
creating Heaven on earth. By celebrating this solemnity, let us pray that we
become a true home of the Holy Trinity and that our families become paradise on
earth.
May God Bless you!
